Chlorine stabilizer, also known as cyanuric acid (CYA), is used to protect chlorine in swimming pools from being degraded by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Here are some key points about its usage:

  1. Purpose: Chlorine stabilizer helps maintain the chlorine levels in your pool by shielding it from UV rays, which can quickly reduce chlorine effectiveness.
  2. Application: It is typically added at the beginning of the swimming season and whenever fresh water is added to the pool. It can come in liquid or granular form, or be included in stabilized chlorine products.
  3. Dosage: The ideal CYA level for most pools is between 30 and 50 parts per million (ppm). For saltwater pools, the recommended level is slightly higher, between 60 and 80 ppm.
  4. Monitoring: Regular testing of CYA levels is important to ensure they remain within the optimal range. Too much stabilizer can lead to “chlorine lock,” where chlorine becomes less effective.
